Ecovadis Platinum 2023

Global sustainability ratings provider EcoVadis recognized Ecolean, for the third year in a row, as top 1% of all 100,000 assessed companies and was awarded the highest EcoVadis medal of Platinum.

2025

Packaging range designed for recycling

As a producer of packaging material, we have set the goal to offer a new range of packaging designed for easier recycling by 2025 at the latest.

Recycling is a pre-requisite for the sustainable use of packaging and a key part of becoming a circular business. Design-for-recycling guidelines are still under development as is the actual collecting, sorting and recycling technology on our markets.

2030

Scope 1-3 emissions reduced

By 2030, we will reduce our scope 1 and scope 2 GHG absolute emissions by 50 percent, and measure and reduce our scope 3 emissions, with 2018 as the base year.

Ecolean also commits to design all packages for easier recycling, manufacture them with 100 percent recycled and/or renewable polymers by 2030, and to support the establishment of recycling systems on the markets in which we operate.

1996

Ecolean is established

Ecolean was founded in the south of Sweden, based on an idea of saving as much as possible of nature’s limited resources.

A unique packaging material was introduced; chalk-filled plastic, which significantly reduced the environmental impact from packaging.

2004

Launch of our Ecolean^® Air package

Ecolean’s packaging range for chilled distribution weighs only half of other types of packages.

Less raw materials, less energy used in production, lighter transports and less waste are only a few of the benefits derived from Ecolean’s lighter approach. And the packaging format holds unique features such as an air-filled handle and easy-to-tear opening.

2008

Launch of our aseptic packaging range

Ecolean^® Air Aseptic packaging range ensures food safety in ambient temperature, prolongs shelf-life and enables the food to be transported over longer distances.

The packages are sterilized using electron beam treatment eliminating the use of chemicals in the sterilization method as well as enabling an aluminum-free, aseptic package.

2017

Complete transparency

Ecolean launches Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its’ complete scope of products, both packages and filling machines, as the only packaging systems provider in the world.

Our ambition to be completely transparent with the impact of our products enables liquid food producers to actually measure and compare the impact from different packaging solutions. You will always find the carbon footprint of our packages on our website.

2020

Sourcing 100% renewable electricity globally

By switching our production plants in Pakistan and China to use green electricity, Ecolean is sourcing 100 percent renewable electricity globally, since 2020.

“We have worked hard on many levels to meet our commitment to use 100 percent renewable electricity for all our production plants by 2030. This target was actually met in 2020 by signing renewable energy agreements for our production sites in Pakistan and China, and is a target we will maintain during the coming years” says Anna Palminger, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ecolean Group.

2020

Science-based targets approved

Ecolean’s emissions reduction targets was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in 2021, which means they are aligned with what’s needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Ecolean’s target is to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030 compared with 2018 and to measure and significantly reduce its scope 3 emissions. The targets are consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement.

2021

Ecolean joined UN Global Compact

Ecolean became a signatory of the UN Global Compact signing up to the global standard of social, economic, and environmental principles.

The UN Global Compact is a voluntary initiative which seeks wide participation from a diverse group of businesses. Participants set in motion changes to business operations so that the UN Global Compact and its Ten Principles become part of strategy, culture and day-to-day operations.
